Looking for a job? State courts campaign to recruit security staff

It’s a job that comes with a starting salary of $39,771, 12 paid holidays and 20 vacation days in the first year.

Within two years, the minimum pay increases to $49,777. Most work shifts are 9-to-5 on Mondays through Fridays. People walking across Niagara Square on Thursday were encouraged to consider becoming New York State court officers. The state’s recruitment van visited downtown as part of an effort to urge people to file applications for upcoming court officer exams.

State Supreme Court Justice Sharon S. Townsend, the head of the state’s Buffalo-based Western New York court system, said the peace officers assigned to court buildings play a vital role.

Applicants must be state residents who are at least age 18 and U. S. citizens. They must possess a high school diploma or an equivalent certificate.

Jewel Williams, chief of public safety for the state’s Office of Court Administration, said people have until July 31 to submit applications for exams that will be administered throughout the state on Oct. 24 and Dec. 12.

Officials said it’s impossible to predict how many new court officers will be hired in the coming year, noting that it hinges on numerous factors that include how many existing officers retire. Court officials said they don’t expect the state budget turmoil to undermine hiring or jeopardize officers’ job security.

“We don’t anticipate any fallout at this point,” said Townsend, noting that the state has been committed to expanding security in court buildings in recent years.

There are about 180 court officers who work in several court facilities in Erie and Niagara counties.

Applicants who are hired will undergo extensive training at a state academy.

Mayor Byron W. Brown joined court officials to kick off the recruitment blitz.

“Clearly, this is a difficult time economically in our country, and these are good job opportunities,” Brown said.

There is a $30 fee to take the exam. For more information, visit www.nycourts.gov/court officer-recruit.
